My mother recently passed away due to heart failure. Mismanagement of meds led to prolonged high blood pressure which exacerbated her heart condition. Misdiagnosis: HCM, which she was treated for and after 4 months meds that work on almost everyone it wasn't working for my mom. It was mentioned that on some patients the meds don't respond well. After going into hospital for the flu which triggered Afib, we found an exceptional cardiologist that did all the necessary tests that we had asked for over a 2 year period which would have clearly shown she didn't have HCM. Due to delays in determining the real issues which we learned was her aortic valve and mitrovalve not HCM ( a clear misreading of the echo) she had progressed with too much calcium buildup which led to her early death 3 months after the flu that weakened her heart further. The new cardiologist was able to balance the meds appropriately but because it wasn't addressed properly early enough, time was unfortunately not in our favor.
What we learned is always ask and demand further testing and always get a second opinion. More importantly have an advocate from the beginning. So disappointing in our health care. The doctors are just too overwhelmed to address problems effectively. RIP mom

Had a heart attack in 2021 and got assigned Dr. Shortal. He's got a personality and is very good cardiologist. I like going to my appointments and he spends time to talk to you instead of boom boom and your done/out. Wish more Doctors had traits like him.

I recently moved to the Deerfield area and selected Dr. Shortal as my cardiologist. That was a very wise decision on my behalf. I quickly learned that Dr. Shortal is a caring cardiologist who is smart, decisive, responsive and fun to speak with. During my first visit with him he removed me from several older drugs and put me on 1 newer drug. This has made my life a lot easier and my Rx's less expensive. Beyond that, whenever I need a refill he is extremely fast in responding. As a side note, he is a former military officer and a competitive marathon runner. -So, if you're a vet and/or athlete you absolutely want him as your physician because he walks the talk and knows what we're all about. In summary, he is the type of doctor that you would gladly have as a friend too. Thank you Dr. Shortal. B. Vezeau
