Essentia Health-St. Mary's Medical Center (Duluth, Building B)

I am a previous essentia employee and my wife is a physician at a satellite clinic and we recently experienced the cafeteria while celebrating the birth of our daughter. We were excited to experience the new hospital and cafeteria and were very disappointed. While beautiful the staff were atrocious and disrespectful. My wife has celiacs disease and I attempted to order a gluten free entree (there were no gluten free options) and the staff treated me with utter disrespect. They scoffed and became very disrespectful. I just asked for a gluten free bun!!! Our nurse had told me that I could get my wife a gluten free burger to celebrate the birth of our daughter and the staff did not accommodate the simple request. The treatment I received and the inability to accommodate a dietary restriction while in a hospital was astounding. I find most restaurants to be more friendly and accommodating. The staff needs to be reminded that the people they are serving are dealing with a spectrum of issues from bad to great. Making their meal stress free... should be the intent they work with. It was not. I was embarrassed to see the essentia I had worked for perform so poorly. The cafeteria at st. Marrys had great people and options...

Had a major surgery on my calf. I've had many surgeries, but the plastic surgeon who operated on me butchered my leg. It's now ruined for life, hurts almost constantly. I woke up with zero painkillers at all, never woke up from a surgery like that. The surgeon was impatient and rude. He pushed the nurse aside when she wasn't going fast enough for him, and ripped off my bandages as painfully as possible. The nurse wrote up a report on him. When I got up to walk hours after surgery, the blood just poured out of my leg. In the three weeks I was there, they never cleaned my room, not once, they did not give or offer a sponge bath, and I had urine burns on my back. The mail nd rifles through all my bags looking for a card I never received, and there's more. The last hospital I would ever go to, in fact, I wouldn't.

I struggle with anxiety. My husband got life- flighted there. My sister and I got treated with respect, knowing we were going through one of the worst times of our life. The nurses were phenomenal! I really owe them more than what they know. They went above and beyond. Thank you again, nurses of St. Mary's Duluth!!

L doctor downplayed my problems after a nurse had dug in trash and touched the needle cap after, major health code violation btw. as if there isn't possibilities for multiple infections and problems that could occur. why would the nurse line tell us to visit within 4 hours if they wouldn't do any tests nor even try to see if anything is wrong or not.

I had a great experience here with Sarah Diaz, D.O. She was really caring, and thorough. She took time to get to know me and she addressed my fears and really listened. The surgery went really well and I am grateful to her. The entire staff were helpful and friendly and the facility is beautiful.
