"I don't think you can go anywhere and get better care from the cardiologists and the nurses and technicians than you can at the LMH Health Heart Center. Most of us have quite a few years of experience, but most of my partners don't have as much grey hair as I do," Dr Michael Zabel says with a smile.
Dr Zabel earned his medical degree from Washington University School of Medicine, and completed his residency and fellowship training in cardiology at Duke University.
"I enjoy treating heart failure patients, those with ischemic heart disease and valvular heart disease, which we're seeing more of because it tends to be age-related," he said.

I had the opportunity to shadow Dr. Zabel for a semester, as a student many years ago. Before every case, he would take time to thoroughly evaluate every patient chart and consider key points before meeting with his patients. Every patient was important to Dr. Zabel and he would listen empathetically and carefully to all concerns. I feel very lucky to have had the opportunity to learn from Dr. Zabel and believe he is a great doctor!

Extremely disappointed in an appointment with Dr. Zabel.
I scheduled an appointment with him since my mom's usual cardiologist is semi retired and we would have to wait several weeks to see him.
We had to wait an hour before he came in and he said he spent the time looking for my mom's records. This was somewhat surprising since he was in the same office/practice as our usual cardiologist and we scheduled the appointment 2 weeks ago.
To add insult to injury, the first words out of his mouth were basically to ask us why we bothered to see him and that he couldn't help us. It didn't help to have him speak to us with his arms crossed and a scowl on his face either.
When I told him her symptoms he basically brushed it off and referred us back to our primary doctor stating that it wasn't his area of expertise. Another shock, considering my mother has had two heart attacks in the past and my family was concerned her symptoms may be signs of another problem.
Dr. Zabel's lack of concern and sense of urgency to get us out of the examination room is something that I've never experienced with any doctor. Regardless of what doctor we have seen in the past they have always gone out of their way to assist us to determine what may be causing the discomfort and provide us recommendations on what to do next.
It appears that Dr. Zabel has enough patients and does not want to be bothered with cases he feels are not related to cardiology.
If you are looking for a disciplined and considerate doctor then I would strongly recommend not going to Dr. Zabel.
