Patient
I was referred to Dr. Jeffrey Hedley, MD, at Sentara Cardiology Specialists, during the summer of 2024 for my paroxysmal AFIB. During an attempted pulsed field ablation in November of 2024, it was discovered that I had a rare congenital heart defect called Cor Triatriatum Sinister, where my left atrium is divided by a thin membrane. It is as if the room has a wall in the middle. Fortunately, my membrane was partial. Although the ablation was not performed at that time, Dr. Hedley continued to treat my AFIB and changed my medication in February, 2025 to more effectively treat my condition. Fortunately, after careful thought and planning, Dr. Hedley was able to perform my pulsed field ablation on August 25, 2025 in collaboration with Dr. Joshua Cohen, a cardiologist specializing in imaging at Sentara Cardiology Specialists. I want to take a moment to give a heartfelt thank you and compliment to Dr. Jeffrey Hedley, and Dr. Joshua Cohen, who were able to successfully perform a pulsed field ablation for me despite my unique anatomy with Cor Triatriatum Sinister. The procedure was done with incredible thought, skill, care, and professionalism. From start to finish, the entire team made me feel informed, safe, and confident. Their expertise and compassion truly made a difference, and I am deeply grateful for the exceptional care I received. Thank you, Dr. Hedley, and Dr. Cohen, for your dedication and for going above and beyond in managing such a complex case. You both are amazing! And a special thank you to Rachael Torres, RN, and Arina Donahue, ACNP-BC, for always answering my many questions and for your reassurance. And special thanks to my prep, procedure and after care team for your professionalism, care, and reassurance. It was truly a TEAM effort. With sincere gratitude, Susan Mayo -- at Norfolk Sentara Heart Hospital.
