About Dr. South Texas Health System McAllen

South Texas Health System first opened its doors in 1919 to provide care to the people of the Rio Grande Valley. STHS McAllen's full-service acute care facility opened in December 1985 after spending more than 50 years in downtown McAllen as McAllen Municipal Hospital, McAllen General Hospital and McAllen Methodist Hospital. STHS McAllen was the first in McAllen and neighboring cities to offer services such as open-heart surgery, one-day cardiac catheterization and magnetic resonance imaging. Today, it's become a large tertiary hospital for specialized treatment with a Level I Trauma Center - making STHS McAllen an invaluable healthcare asset in South Texas. We are also a Comprehensive Stroke Center.

My mom just left the hospital today and I wanted to be sure I left a review. Everyone from housekeeping Maria and Norma, to the CNA's Susie, Sasha, Liza and Nurses Gloria, Nurse Jesse, Nurse Bill, Nurse Carmen, Nurse Lizbeth were helpful and respectful to her. Mr. Gordon, and Dr. Rosas, Dr. Ponce and Dr. Martinez were wonderful in communicating with my mom on her progress and concerns. She was in Room 738 in case I missed anyone! You have such a difficult job yet, you took the time to always ask if we needed anything and if my mom was comfortable. We her family cannot thank you enough for what you did for my mom!

I recently had a procedure done at the McAllen regional hospital. I was great impressed and very appreciative of the treatment and care of the staff and doctor. From beginning to end the nurses had a kind and caring attitude. They explained what they were doing in a calm and kind manner. Dr. Phillip Kim too was very through and thoughtful in explaining the procedure. The hospital also has a good system in letting the love ones in givi ng notice in where you are in each part of the procedure. God bless them all for their great work and for doing their calling with great excellence

I went to the ER because I had a pain on my right side . I arrived at 3 pm 10-14-2025, by 3:30 I was in an ER room, a nurse asked what was the issue, I told her about the pain. By 4:15 pm a PA saw me and asked were the pain was. She said that a Cat Scan would show what would cause the pain . I agreed. By 4:45 pm I was taken to get a Cat Scan. The scan took 10 min. By 5:45 pm the PA came to tell me that I had an inflamed appendix and it needed to be removed. By 6 pm I am in the OR being prepared for surgery. The surgeon, Dr Cantu explained the procedure. She said if the appendix is not ruptured if would only take her 15 min to remove it , if ruptured 2 to 3 hours. The anesthesiologist came and talked to me and explained that general anesthesia would be used he would be breathing for me. By 6:15 pm I am on the OR table. And by 6:45 pm I am waking up in the OR area minus an appendix. By 7:10 pm I am in a room. Everyone from the ER to the OR , nurses and staff were very professional and accommodating. By the next day 10-15-2025 I was released at 1 pm and at home by 2 pm. Laparoscopic surgery was used to remove the appendix.

I simply don't have enough positive words to say about the staff I had during my hospital stay. I have been profoundly sick this year. It's changed everything. We are new to the area. We moved here after a health scare. Because of this: my in and out of hospitals and repeat visits. I am automatically marked as a seeker. The skepticism hits immediately. But: NOT HERE :) Major Kudos to everyone in my stay. I had a pretty serious incident and: ERIC, CHRISTINA, MARK and SELENA are genuinely people who care. Active listening, no skepticism, excellent communication skills and professional. This hospital for me and the staff reminded me that there is "care" in "healthcare " We would like to recommend some a Starbucks? Something similar? My husband was surprised he had to leave the location. Most hospitals have that option :)
