Patient
I had a very disappointing and unprofessional experience with nurse practitioner Doris Obaze. When I arrived, I completed my paperwork and clearly indicated that I am female. When Doris called me back, I introduced my wife. Despite this, she repeatedly questioned both of our genders. I explained multiple times that I am a female, born female, and my wife is also a female, born female. She continued to ask if either of us were male, then asked again if there was a husband. I told her we are lesbians and married. Her confusion and repeated questions showed a complete lack of respect and cultural awareness. On top of that, she was on a personal phone call when she walked me to the exam room, and then answered another personal call during my appointment. This took away from my care and felt extremely unprofessional. The office staff also kept referring to her as a doctor, which is misleading and creates false expectations about the level of care being provided. When I expressed how uncomfortable the interaction made me, she told me I had no reason to be upset. No provider should ever invalidate a patient's feelings, especially after repeatedly questioning their identity and relationship. I left feeling disrespected and dismissed. My wife's gender has nothing to do with my healthcare and it never should have been questioned. I would strongly urge anyone in the LGBTQ+ community to seek care elsewhere.
