Patient

My experience with Dr. Bensimhon was deeply troubling. His dismissive and uncollaborative attitude, coupled with a cold and condescending demeanor, left everyone in the room disturbed and it lacked empathy. He reduced my mother to tears, a stark and disturbing contrast - a doctor entrusted with the care of hearts, yet seemingly devoid of one himself. After he left the room, a family member spoke for all of us when he said, 'I don't ever want to see him in this room again.' Our concerns began with a serious medical misstep. Despite a clear plan agreed upon the previous day, my mother was given an incorrect dosage of Milrinone. This resulted in a dangerously high heart rate of 140-160 bpm, accompanied by arrhythmias that lasted through the night and into the next day. Frantic attempts to contact Dr. Bensimhon's team--both by us and the hospital nurses--were met with silence. It wasn't until 11:00 AM the following day that someone read one of our urgent messages, yet he failed to address the situation until 4:00 PM. That was my mom's first day on Milrinone- That felt intentional. It felt like he made my mom his last stop for the day on purpose. When we raised concerns about the dosage and its effects on the heart, his response was both dismissive and alarming. Instead of considering a gradual reduction to the agreed-upon amount, he said, "If you want, I can turn it all off." Dr. Bensimhon displayed a lack of knowledge. Claiming that my mother wasn't a candidate for an LVAD due to her small stature--a false assertion contradicted by specialists at Wake Forest, Mount Sinai, Mass General Brigham, Atrium Health, and Mission Hospital. These experts not only confirmed her eligibility for an LVAD but also expressed concerns about her being placed on Milrinone in the first place. Size should never be a limiting factor when determining whether the HeartMate 3 is appropriate. His misinformation and unwillingness to consider alternative treatments could have had serious consequences for my mother's care. Dr. Bensimhon's displayed a controlling behavior that was evident in his interactions with both us and other specialists. We felt discouraged to seek second opinions and he expressed frustration with other physicians contacting him about my mom's case. This raised concerns about his willingness to consider alternative perspectives and collaborate for the best possible treatment plan. This behavior extended to forbidding us from audio recording our conversations, stating "You can't record me!" This was perplexing, considering it is legal to record physician conversations in North Carolina with one-party consent, as it is in 38 other states and DC. Also note that HIPAA, the law protecting patient privacy, does not prohibit patients from recording their own medical conversations. Recording medical discussions is a valuable tool for understanding complex information, and most of our other doctors encourage it. His disproportionate and unhinged reactions further solidified our concerns about his commitment to open communication and collaborative care. He appeared more focused on limiting our access to information than ensuring the best outcome for my mother. This experience with the revolving door of hospitalizations and lack of progress, forced us to discontinue Dr. Bensimhon's involvement and seek treatment elsewhere. Human connection and compassion are vital in healthcare. This is a plea to all patients and families to advocate for themselves, seek second opinions, and never settle for care that feels cold, dismissive, or uncaring. When you've been given a terminal diagnosis, seek second, third, fourth, even fifth opinions. As many as it takes for your mother. Don't give up hope until you've explored all options and found a healthcare team that prioritizes your well-being and empowers you to make informed, collaborative decisions. When it comes to matters of the heart, both physical and emotional, compassion should always be at the center of care.
