I was an Xray tech in the SE ER in the 90s before I became disabled, I then lost a kidney in 2000 to renal cancer. In 2006, the nephrectomy scar on my right side herniated, involving my liver. I was hospitalized and surgeon Dr Joseph McCadams was called in. Laparoscopic hernia surgery was scheduled for July 2006 on a Friday, by Sunday post op, my right side was swelling and turning red. I was refused an appointment when I called his office the next day & ended up in the ER the next day. They called him and he instructed them to send me home, that I was fine. I called his office the next day, and again was refused an appointment, being told I would have to wait for the post op appointment already set for the following week.
The pain was becoming unbearable & I started running a fever so I went back to the ER & was admitted, Dr McCadams later appeared in my room in the ER, angry that I'd been admitted and telling me not to expect any drugs from him.
He came to my doorway in the hospital each morning, mocking me for crying in pain. He gave me no fluids & insufficient antibiotics, I felt so alone and scared. Post op patients are so vulnerable, and to be verbally abused and mocked by the very person who did this to me was life altering. I ended up leaving ama & had my elderly parents drive me to St. Louis, to SLU ER where I was quickly surrounded by people, admitted and scheduled for emergency surgery the next morning. I spent the night with 4 IV machines trying to rehydrate me and pumping me full of antibiotics. I was at SLU for nearly a month after that, my surgeon told he had not expected me to live & that the care I had experienced under Dr McCadams care was very poor. The infection damaged my pancreas, leaving me with chronic pancreatitis for 5 years and even now, I live with pancreatic insufficiency. I have severe right side muscle damage and use a walker if I have to walk very far.
I did report him to the state medical board once I recovered enough from the resulting PTSD but it was likely too late, many years had passed by then. I can't recommend this person at all, he can be quite abusive to vulnerable patients. I had left my review on Dr McCadams Google reviews many years ago but when he moved to Mercy from the clinic, he had his Google reviews turned off, effectly deleting all the bad reviews, including mine. That's why I'm putting it here on the hospital page, I don't want anyone to suffer the way I did from his abuse. Be safe out there

Was taken to er by my wife for possible stroke symptoms. Did not care for Dr Gregory or talking to a neurologist thru a computer. As big of a place you have there should be one on staff 24/7. Your nursing staff was the best of the best and couldn't ask for better. Only time you seen the dr is when he walked by like a lost dog and when I told the nurse I wanted papers for AMA and he come tried talk me out of it cause they on screen neurologist that I needed to. I can promise I'll continue to use your services but the Dr on the computer will not be brought in or I'll ignore him and request one to our room. Also if Gregory is working I'll leave. He is useless. And yes I signed my ama papers and walked out!

If I could give zero stars I would we came in to get my 13 yr old Knee and back looked at everything was ok than I asked after two hrs how much longer for radiology to read the X-rays the lady comes in and has a paper in her hand basically telling me I'm leaving never said I was leaving I called someone to sit with my child because I had an appointment for 4pm her first thing was basically telling me to leave and someone would give me a call I said no yall already charged my insurance for my visit I asked her why she was being rude in front of my child she continued to get loud with me and roll her eyes. As she was walking out the door I asked my child did she roll her eyes again she said yes the door shut and she was still yelling I'm not rolling my eyes first thing first never argue with patients.how do you expect people to think yall genuinely care when first option is to tell us to leave! Never will I ever bring any of my loved ones to this hospital is was the lady that checks you in at registration she's definitely rude and very unprofessional especially that's the first person you see when you check in how about do your job instead of giggling in the security guards face all layed back in a chair very unprofessional!! Definitely needs to be re trained!!

If I could give negative stars I would. My mother came to the ER Monday for possible stroke and after surgery complications. Once it was determined that she hadn't had a stroke, the staff fell off the face of the earth. Meanwhile she is in severe pain and has internal bleeding from the surgery. She had to use the restroom and hollered for 15 min, hearing the staff in the hall but unable to get out of bed. (The call button had been placed out of reach). It was determined that she would be overnight and there were 7 people waiting on beds. She got her room today and has basically been forgotten.
There is no staff and most of those who are here don't want to be. And they make it painfully obvious.

Parking out front is crowded. Front desk is helpful. Layout can be challenging as will all hospitals that have grown and done multiple expansions. Care seems to be pretty good. I haven't heard many complaints or praises. Patients seem to be "content."
