I cannot recommend Dr. Walter DeNino at Maine Medical Center highly enough. If I could give him six stars for essentially refusing to let Austin die, I would.
Austin faced a gauntlet of setbacks leading up to his LVAD implantation, and throughout every single hurdle, Dr. DeNino was there. He didn't just perform the surgery and vanish; he was a constant, stabilizing presence through the entire process. What's even more impressive is his follow-through--he consistently checked in then, and he still checks in now to ensure everything is 'all good.'
It is incredibly rare to find a surgeon with this level of technical skill who also possesses the heart to stay personally invested in a patient's long-term recovery. If you find yourself at Maine Med needing a cardiothoracic surgeon, pray you get Dr. DeNino. He's the reason Austin is still here!

Stay away at all costs! Caused premature death of my father. My father fell out of bed when supposedly on 24 hr watch, he contracted infection because of unsanitary conditions and died. Never addressed high white cell blood counts and overdosed him on medications leading to serious delirium. If you value your life, stay away from Dr. DeNino.

Did surgery on my 80 yr old very active dad at onset of COVID, no one could be at the hospital. Horrible "bedside manner". Dad did beautifully immediately post op. Tx'd downstairs. Went into rapid a- fib for which they pushed Amiodorone without checking to see that he already had some interstitial lung disease! #1 side effect of Amiodorone is that it causes interstitial lung disease. This then exacerbated dad's existing lung disease and he couldn't breathe... again, no one could go in to see him. I only spoke to the man once immediately after surgery when he clearly had an attitude. We never heard or spoke to him again. Then Dr DeNino treated him for pneumonia for weeks despite our repeated requests for a pulm consult. Finally he went on vaca and the covering Dr finally called for a pulm consult after 5 min with my dad to find he had full blown interstitial lung disease caused by the Amiodorone. The beginning of the end. He was in the hosp and/ or rehab for 3 mos then home with oxygen 24/7. In and out through the next 2.5 yrs. We lost my dad last fall. His last 2.5 years was miserable thanks to his neglect to read the chart before pushing the Amiodorone on a patient who already had an underlying diagnosis of interstitial lung disease.

Dr DeNino saved my life. Another heart surgeon started an operation on my heart then realized I was much worse than they thought. They called Dr Denino in to do my emergency open heart surgery.
