Patient
My experience with Dr. O'Leary was through my mom's hospitalization at Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital. The hospital was about to discharge mom despite experiencing delirium the day following a surgery. It wasn't until her blood pressure dropped to 62/40 that they decided to keep her and call in a cardiologist. The cardiologist was Dr. Patrick O'Leary. Dr. O'Leary, came into the room and started asking mom questions about her past health history. As mom's medical POA and given the fact she was experiencing delirium at the time, I tried to help her out by explaining to the Dr. what was happening. The Dr. very coldly said, "who are you?" I replied that I was mom's son and medical POA, to which he replied "What? Does she have dementia or something?" and proceeded to body block me from mom by positioning his back to me and standing between us. Dr. O'Leary concluded that mom's blood pressure situation was due to the heart meds she has been on for two decades without issue. I tried to ask what has changed, because this did not make logical sense, and he ignored me. Maybe he put something else in his records, but communication does not appear to be Dr. O'Leary's strong point - at least from our interaction. A few days later, he put her back on the same meds and said she was now fine. When mom had asked him to call me to explain everything, he told her that it wasn't necessary because nothing changed. He was one of a few doctors who cleared her for discharge. Two days after discharge, we had to send her back to another hospital due to extreme delirium. At that hospital, we were told that Dr. O'Leary's notes said that she had congestive heart failure, which he never disclosed to us, and he had not offered any treatment for. About a month later, we get a bill from Duly for a missed cardiologist appointment that no one knew about, that Dr. O'Leary had made for my mom with another doctor in his office. I'm not sure where all of these "good" reviews are coming from, because we did not experience anything close to good from our experience with Dr. O'Leary. He seemed annoyed that he had to treat my mom, and was very quick to push her out of his care. In fact, when I had tried to post before, it had been deleted, which is also questionable behavior. I would strongly urge people to avoid this doctor if you can.
