This is long overdue since my daughter had an emergency surgery here last October 28, 2025. It was dark and raining but was surprised to find good and covered parking. Also, the hospital staff in any floor and around the facility were all nice and helpful. The parking overnight is less than an hour of parking in Downtown San Diego. The cafeteria is not only open late closes at 3:00am but re opens at 7:00am. My daughter was given good food she ordered from menu that looks like a regular menu not like usual bland diet. They let her order as much as she can eat after her surgery. Her surgery was at night after 8:30am. By the way their cafeteria has better coffee flavor choices and prices than the Starbucks inside the hospital that closed earlier. The cafeteria menu is amazing, Tacos, Ramen, pizza , breakfast serves omelets, bacon etc. They have hot food even at 10:00pm when I was able to eat after my daughter's surgery. The view from her room beats the view of a hotel room. View of the ocean and it's big and clean. I remember the two nurse and nurse aid both named Britney. They made her hospital stay pleasant and comfortable. Her Doctor and staff at the ER very kind and informative. They sent me a text to let me know surgery went well. At the fourth floor where she was admitted the nurses at the nurses station was helpful too. She let my daughter's phone charge since she didn't bring her phone charger. So this detailed review is necessary so you can imagine how amazing this hospital is. The best service, treatment and made me look at hospitals a different way. If I can guve mote than 5 stars, I will give this a 10 star review.

This review is specifically about Hoag's billing practices and pricing structure. The concern lies with how Hoag bills routine office visits and imaging. Patients should be aware that even if you're going in for a standard appointment in a regular doctor's office, Hoag can code the visit as a "hospital outpatient service" simply because the building is owned by Hoag. That coding triggers hospital-level charges instead of a standard office copay. For example, a basic office visit that should have been a $30 copay was billed as an outpatient hospital service, and insurance applied a $158.27 deductible instead. My initial visit to the same doctor was billed accurately as a regular office visit, which shows it can be done correctly, but later visits were coded differently with no explanation. Imaging was even more extreme. An ultrasound performed at Hoag HB location was billed at $2141.90 with a $322.91 deductible, plus an additional $179 charge for the radiologist. For comparison, the same type of ultrasound done at Providence earlier this year was billed at $391 with a $15 copay, and radiology was $290 with a $15 copay. The difference is over $1,600 for identical services. Patients should always request estimates--even for routine office visits--if the office is located inside a Hoag-owned facility. It's also more cost-effective to use independent imaging providers (for X-rays, ultrasound, MRI, CT, etc.) rather than going through Hoag, where pricing is significantly higher than market rates. Despite its claim in quality medical care, the billing system lacks transparency and does not reflect what most patients would reasonably expect for standard services. Anyone choosing this hospital should double-check how visits and imaging will be coded before receiving care.

My experience with Dr. Salman Okour during my endoscopy was excellent. He reassured me, worked conscientiously and precisely without causing me any harm, which I really appreciated. Thanks to all the hospital nurses, especially Kathryn (RN), who was very friendly, helped me a lot, and made sure I was comfortable throughout my stay. Also, thanks to the anesthesiologist for her kindness and professional care. The hospital is clean, organized, and gives high attention to patients. I highly recommend it.

I had a scheduled procedure yesterday at Hoag in Newport Beach. What an amazing hospital and the staff are phenomenal. I checked in with Chris at reception and what a wonderful, positive and uplifting individual with great customer service skills. I was then led back to the surgery area where I met Beth my pre-op nurse who was so nice, caring, professional and simply pleasant. Beth also rolled me out to my wife's car when leaving. Dr. Blatt and Dr. Prunean were stellar and so professional, skilled and kind. McKenna and Jenna were my OR nurses and were so kind and professional as well. Once the procedure was completed I woke up to Mzelle who was also a gem and then transferred to Vivian Lean who was another shining star. Great people and so compassionate, kind, skilled and professional. Today I had Jennifer call to check on me and she was such a lovely individual with her kindness and follow-up. Thankful for such a wonderful experience and today I am doing well. Highly recommended.

My water leaked on 10/4 at 8 PM in spoonfuls. I was 40w2d and completely sure it was not normal discharge. When I went to Hoag the next morning, the test for amniotic fluid came back negative, but one of the nurses advocated for me to be admitted anyway because I was extremely dry late in pregnancy and she felt the test might not have picked up what was left. I appreciated that. Induction itself was painful and uncomfortable. Most nurses were kind and reassuring, but one who was with me briefly responded in a way that made me feel dismissed when I was crying and shaking from a cervical check. I was already overwhelmed, and that moment made things harder. The rest of the labor nurses were compassionate. Two nurses stayed with me right before pushing and supported me throughout. I pushed for four hours with a very large baby and they helped guide his head the entire time. With about fifteen minutes left before potential interventions, he finally rotated out. They even brought a bar so I could try squatting, but my epidural was too strong for me to stay upright. My delivering doctor coached me well despite the fact that I had barely slept for days. After delivery, my experience changed. The first lactation consultant came in while I was barely awake and immediately tried to get my newborn to latch in a way that felt rushed and forceful. My baby already had a sensitive temperament in the womb, and I knew the approach wouldn't work for him. When I gently said he didn't seem comfortable, she responded sharply and physically redirected my head away. It caught me completely off guard. My husband stayed quiet because he was worried about being labeled difficult and affecting the rest of my care. She also repeatedly asked if my chest was natural, even though I explained I simply have a naturally large chest with nipples that are difficult for a newborn. It felt strange and accusatory, and it added more stress when I was already exhausted. Then came the feeding issues. My baby wasn't just doing mild newborn gurgles; he was struggling during feeds. My husband and I stayed awake for two days straight burping him because we were afraid to sleep. Several postpartum nurses kept repeating that I was not burping him enough, even though I have experience caring for infants and knew something else was going on. Thankfully, the pediatrician came in. I told her my baby did not seem to be breathing comfortably, and she immediately sent him to the nursery. They were able to clear a significant amount of leftover fluid, and while he still spit up afterward, it was noticeably less severe. My milk also dried up from stress even though I had been producing well before birth. I asked for formula so I could focus on pumping later at home. Several nurses reacted like they did not believe I had previously been producing milk, and only the pediatrician trusted what I said. They hesitated to give formula until I insisted. My 10 lb newborn clearly needed more than a small amount of colostrum. One nurse before discharge kept repeating the same line about burping even though I hadn't slept in days and my baby had already been suctioned. A nurse before her had given a slightly higher feeding amount because he needed more, which helped him. The next nurse saw that and assumed I had done it and reacted strongly even though I explained it wasn't me. She did a very quick burping attempt, placed him down, and left. At that point, I went to the desk and explained how overwhelmed I was. They finally observed him in the nursery. They tried a gentle formula and the gagging stopped. His stomach seemed sensitive and he still had some leftover fluid earlier. Later, a nurse commented to another staff member that I might be struggling from pain, but my husband clarified that the real issue was that we had not slept because our baby was having difficulty feeding. We weren't being dramatic; we were exhausted and had been trying to care for him nonstop. I was discharged on day three. Once I got home and felt safe, my milk came in fully on the second day.
