A Heartfelt Journey: From Hernia Repair to Open-Heart Surgery In November 2023, I underwent a scheduled hernia repair procedure, anticipating a brief detour to my active life. However, this routine surgery unexpectedly unveiled a concealed cardiac threat. The general surgeon's request for cardiologist clearance during the pre-operative evaluation puzzled me, as I had never experienced any cardiac issues in my 68 years. In November 2024, I was introduced to Dr. Thomas A. Ritchie, M.D., a specialist highly recommended by my son for his expertise. I was immediately struck by Dr. Ritchie's professionalism and courteousness. Dr. Ritchie ordered a CT scan, which, although inconclusive, suggested potential blood flow issues in my heart arteries due to excessive plaque accumulation. Subsequently, Dr. Ritchie referred me to Dr. Green for a left heart catheterization, revealing severe blockages: 60% in the left main coronary artery, 100% in the left anterior descending artery, and 70% in the lower right coronary artery. The inability to place stents due to the severity of these blockages was a shocking revelation. In January 2024, I consulted Dr. Ritchie regarding the next steps in my treatment. He expressed grave concerns about my heart condition, emphasizing that addressing my heart issues took precedence over the hernia repair. Confronted with this critical diagnosis, Dr. Ritchie recommended open-heart surgery and referred me to Dr. Darryl Stein, a renowned cardiac surgeon. On January 18, 2024, I met with Dr. Stein, who impressed me with his humility and thorough presentation of the surgical procedure. Dr. Stein elucidated the imminent risk of a heart attack, underscoring the rationale for initially declining the hernia surgery. On January 26, 2024, Dr. Stein performed the open-heart surgery at Banner Heart Hospital, which was successful. I was discharged on February 1, 2024, and as of four weeks post-operation, I have regained 70% of my normal life, albeit with some restrictions, and am on the path to recovery. I am profoundly struck by the significant impact that individuals like Dr. Ritchie can have on my life and the lives of others. His expertise has been pivotal in guiding me through this treatment journey and facilitated the early detection of my heart condition, averting potentially serious consequences. My trust in Dr. Ritchie was further solidified by the successful heart surgery. I am deeply grateful to him for his referral to the distinguished heart surgeon, Dr. Stein. This experience has not only saved my life but has also cultivated a profound appreciation for the exceptional healthcare professionals who dedicate themselves to healing others. I am incredibly grateful for the care and compassion demonstrated by the ICU nurses at Banner Heart Hospital, including Rachel Ramirez, RN, Brenda, Kyle, and Parker, whose exemplary care played a pivotal role in my recovery.
